What is Contextual Advertising?
In short, search engine advertising (Google, Bing, etc.) is shown to users when they search and visit partner websites. Payment for this type of advertising is made when potential customers click on your website.
These are advertisements shown by search engines like Google in the context of what the user has searched for.
For example, a user searched online for “rent a car.” Google returned organic results, which are achieved solely through SEO. At the top and bottom of the page, the results are contextual advertising results, as seen on the left. Results labeled “Ad” in green are paid ad impressions from Google.
When a user clicks on a given result, the advertiser’s account is charged the cost of one click. This can start as low as $0.01 and depends on the search query’s competitiveness and the advertiser’s website’s relevance. This is where the abbreviation PPC (Pay Per Click) comes from.
Remarketing is repeated display of ads on sites that are part of the Google remarketing network, as well as sites such as YouTube , which is also included in contextual advertising.
Why remarketing is useful and necessary: by clicking on a link to an advertiser’s website, a customer will subsequently see ads from the advertiser, both text and banners, on websites within the remarketing network and Google partners (see example on the left). The customer isn’t immediately ready to buy; they want to shop around, consider the price, and explore.
